Dawson County High Prom Fashion Show 2009

2009_0308pictures0091 On Saturday, March 7th, 2009, Lava Hair Studio participated in the Dawson County High School Fashion Show by doing the hair and makeup for a dozen high school students who were models in the fashion show showing off their new prom fashions. Lava also did the hair and makeup for the students who participated in the Prom Fashion Show of 2008.

_dsc_0037 Friday, February 6th, 2009 Karen Covington, the owner of Lava Hair Studio was awarded the prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year award by the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce. Surprised by the nomination, Karen gave an impromptu speach about her "pay it forward" philosophy, her gratitude to the community and to her staff, and her new understanding of the meaning of the word community.

Lava Hair Studio is not just an upscale salon in the heart of the Dawsonville 400 area. It was a dream that came to life through a passion for the art of hair design. Karen Covington was first drawn to Dawsonville by its country feel and its city convenience. She found the perfect spot to make her dream a reality. In a brick building overlooking the North Georgia Premium Outlets, she found a space with a modern, studio feel and large glass windows that provide a beautiful view of the mountains and pointed spires that adorn the roofs of the outlet mall. Next, it was time to design and decorate. She created a salon that is upscale, unique, and modern. Then, she had to give it a name. She wanted a name that wasn’t easy to forget. Have you ever been to the grocery store and heard a voice coming from behind saying, “I love your hair. It looks amazing! Where do you get it done?” I have and—lucky me—I get to brag on my own team of professionals. Communication is the key to making the experience that starts in the salon chair a successful one. Good communication helps to develop a lasting relationship with your stylist that will outlive the “Jennifer” and the desire to become a blonde at 50.

As an owner of a successful hair salon, I feel that to be a great communicator, one has to understand and effectively practice both ends of the communication process—listening and speaking. Good communicators take total responsibility for hearing and processing information, as well as confidently providing insight and displaying appropriate nonverbal cues throughout the interaction with a client. This is true for my profession and most others.
